The importance of philanthropy

Professor Brian Cox of the University of Manchester (and prolific science presenter) talks about the importance of philanthropy in higher education and research.

My issue with his stance on needing more PhDs is that while this is lovely for research, what happens to these people after they finish, and have no academic jobs to go into, or are too qualified for other jobs?
